Being on the Wharf

The idea to produce a documentary was conceived during a class discussion among a group of students. While expressing interest in the story of the fishermen’s plight at King’s Wharf in San Fernando, it was observed that some of Martin Heidegger’s concepts could be applied to this contemporary issue; therefore it was decided to pursue their story. The idea was to highlight the fishermen’s dilemma while demonstrating how the observations of this Philosopher could still be applied today. In fact, it could give the audience an opportunity to examine the issue from a viewpoint other than an economic or political one.

The proposal to replace Kings Wharf with a boardwalk similar to the development in Chaguaramas has been met with mixed reviews. Of all stakeholders involved, the fishermen from the Wharf will be the most affected. According to the philosophy of Martin Heidegger they will be affected in a more intrinsic way.
